Woman Against Birth Control Pills: How "The Pill" Ruined My Sex Life

After years of taking birth control pills, a woman finds that her body no longer works the way it should when she has sex.
Case #:1300
Concern:

I am a WABCP (woman against birth control pills). Sure, my love affair with the pill started off wonderful—lots of sex, no periods, and moderate discharge. Fast forward a few years: My love affair went sour. Now, in my late 20s, I experience intense discharge. My sex drive is non-existent. I also experience vaginal numbness during sex, but the worst problem is the orgasm difficulty. What’s wrong with my body? I just want to have orgasms again!
Discussion:

Millions of women around the world use birth control pills or other functionally similar forms of contraception. Among those millions, many can appreciate the convenience and effectiveness of hormonal birth control without suffering from any unpleasant side effects. Unfortunately, for a significant minority of hormonal contraception users, this "magic pill" isn't all it's cracked up to be. Birth control pills can cause a staggering list of side effects that occupy virtually every imaginable point on the scale between annoying and life threatening. Occasionally, susceptible users find that the pill dulls their libido or takes the enjoyment out of sex by making orgasms unattainable, defeating its intended purpose.
How do Birth Control Pills Work?

Birth control pills and other forms of hormonal contraceptive, such as patches, shots, and vaginal rings, overwhelm the endocrine system with synthetic forms of estrogen and progesterone. The key goal of birth control medications is to inhibit ovarian function by removing essential hormones that regulate them, similar to the process that halts ovulation during pregnancy. Unfortunately, by preventing the ovaries from working, you are also preventing them from producing testosterone at normal ratios.
Birth control pills also cause an overproduction of chemicals that bind to testosterone. If your levels of circulating testosterone drop too low, you may experience a decrease in libido, since sexual desire is heavily dependent on optimal androgen levels. Testosterone additionally plays an important role in initiating vaginal lubrication and other physical mechanisms of arousal, as well as powering orgasms. Without the proper balance between testosterone and other hormones that regulate sexual function, many women find it more difficult to enjoy sex and experience satisfying orgasms.
Since birth control pills also tend to contain progestins, women on the pill may also see an increase in vaginal discharge. If this discharge becomes excessive, it could put you at a higher risk for vaginal infection. Progesterone stimulates the cervix and uterus to contract and shed skin, and is an important hormone in regulating menstruation. At high enough levels, progesterone can cause spotting of the uterine lining between periods.
How to Feel like Your Old Self Again

If you have not already done so, it sounds like you need to switch to birth control method that does not rely on hormonal manipulation. Everyone's hormone balance is slightly different, and some people simply cannot ingest large amounts of estrogen and progesterone each month without problematic side effects. With a little research, you will find that there is a variety of safer contraceptive approaches available that won't derail your sex life. You can also combine methods, for example, male condoms and spermicidal lube, to increase their effectiveness.
After you stop using the pill, it may take many months for your liver to clear out the years of metabolite buildup from synthetic hormones. It is not known exactly how long the side effects of birth control pills can linger after prolonged use. You may be able to speed your recovery with herbal medicines that enhance liver functions and simulate blood circulation.
