Three Months after Giving Birth, Her Niece’s Hair is Falling Out

A 25-year-old mother suffers from hair loss three months after giving birth. Her doctor blamed the condition on pregnancy and prescribed iron supplements. The real problem, however, is hormonal imbalance caused by the combined effects of pregnancy and sexual exhaustion.
Case #: 970
Concern:

I am 55, but my niece is about 25. She had a baby over three months ago, and she is losing hair. Her doctor told her the culprit was having a baby, and he advised she see him in three months. I have read your website and feel you would have the answers. She is a petite girl, about 100 pounds or less. She is taking iron as prescribed by her doctor but to no avail.
Discussion:

Estrogen and progesterone are the two primary female sex hormones produced by the body. They work in harmony and essentially offset each other’s functions. For instance, estrogen causes fluid retention and contributes to loss of libido, while progesterone is a natural diuretic and promotes healthy sexual desire. You can therefore see why keeping these two chemicals in balance is so crucial to a healthy body.
During pregnancy, estrogen and progesterone levels both rise in order to nourish the developing embryo and suppress further ovulation. But hormone levels don’t always regulate immediately after labor, and engaging in sex can make matters worse. New mothers often struggle with hormonal imbalances that cause fatigue, depression and memory loss. Hair thinning is another side effect that, when left untreated, can force a woman to worry about her appearance and reduce her self-confidence.
The Role of Progesterone

Progesterone is mainly produced by the ovaries. It is essential to the healthy development of a baby and remains high throughout pregnancy to keep the baby warm and well-nourished. Aside from pregnancy, this chemical also helps regulate sexual desire, mood and sleep.
Immediately following childbirth, progesterone levels plummet and return to normal only with the onset of menstruation. When progesterone remains low for an extended period of time, it gives way to a condition known as estrogen dominance. This means progesterone and estrogen levels are no longer balanced, and the body’s natural functions are therefore interrupted.
Sex and Sexual Exhaustion After Pregnancy

After having a child and abstaining from sex for the appropriate number of weeks, many couples hope to resume healthy lovemaking. But the implications of sex extend well beyond physical pleasure. This act releases a number of hormones that promote a sense of well-being and even relieve pain.
When combined with the after-effects of pregnancy, however, repeated bouts of intercourse can give way to sexual exhaustion. This is a condition in which the body is physically overspent. It also means hormone levels are out of whack – particularly with regard to too much estrogen and not enough progesterone.
Before you think to yourself that sexual exhaustion is a figment of the imagination, consider this: the female body endures a marathon of reactions both before and during sex. Muscles clench, heartbeat accelerates and even breathing increases. All of this is in anticipation of an orgasm, which is the moment when hormones flood the body.
How Progesterone Relates to Hair Loss

Sexual exhaustion contributes to hair loss by interfering with hormone levels – namely, by causing an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, up to 40 percent of women in the United States experience hair thinning before age 40. The cause is largely attributed to thyroid functions, suppressed by estrogen dominance.
The thyroid’s only function is to release hormones that go directly into the bloodstream. Those hormones, in turn, regulate energy levels, keep organs healthy and maintain body temperature. Without their release, hair and nails turn brittle, and the former often breaks off and/or falls out. This is what leads to noticeable hair thinning in many women.
Stop the Exhaustion and Hair Loss

One of the best ways to combat sexual exhaustion is with an herbal tincture. (SEE: Tincture for Combating Sexual Exhaustion) These remedies combine the healing effects of herbs with the harnessing power of alcohol. It is, in fact, the use of alcohol that helps extract the medicinal properties of herbs. The end result is a beverage that can increase libido and energy, stabilize hormones and cleanse the blood. Hair loss will stop even as natural body functions are restored.
