Beyond Running Cramps

Female has been experiencing cramping after orgasm, and also after running, for two years. What is this cause of this unusual pain? Can anything be done to prevent it?

Case #: 1370

Concern:

This question is for a female friend who has been experiencing cramping after orgasm for the last two years. She also experiences these uterine (I'm guessing, maybe cervical) cramps after running. Can you shed any light on her situation and suggest any remedies?

Discussion:

Unfortunately, it sounds very much as though your friend has endometriosis. Endometriosis isn’t something that’s contracted; scientists aren’t entirely sure where it comes from, or why it occurs when it does. One thing that is known is that it’s usually hereditary, so if her mother or sisters have endometriosis, it’s likely that she will too.

It’s Growing!

Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally grows inside the uterus—the endometrium, to which an egg would attach and be nourished throughout its time in the womb—begins to grow outside of the uterus. One of the possible reasons for this is an idea known as retrograde menstruation. This is when menstrual blood containing bits of endometrium flows backwards up the fallopian tubes, and the small particles of endometrium bond to the surface of the fallopian tubes, ovaries, or pelvis, and begin growing their own uterine tissue.

In and of itself, this would not be an enormous issue, but problems arise when the tissue is irritated by normal muscle motions in the abdomen, in situations such as running, and also during menstruation. During menstruation, whilst the uterus sheds it’s unwanted endometrial layer, all the rest of the excess uterine tissue does as well. This results in a horrifying amount of blood, and above average levels of cramping and discomfort.

Why So Painful?

During menstruation, hormones are released known as prostaglandins. One hormone in particular, prostaglandin E2, controls uterine contractions. However, this hormone also controls pain and inflammation.

PGE2 is also formed through a chemical reaction at the site of tissue irritation due to things such as abrasion, that’s why your friend has been experiencing cramping after running. While she runs, her innards rub against the endometrial tissue, causing her body to create this inflammatory substance, which causes lower abdominal cramping.

Cut the Cramping with Cramp Bark

Now, as to preventing this issue, she ought to try taking a Cramp Bark, Vibernum opulus, supplement. Cramp Bark has been used for centuries as a way for women to control their menstrual cramps. It contains antispasmodic compounds that prevent the uterus from reacting to the prostaglandins. The compounds are so strong that they have been used to prevent abortion and stop early deliveries in pregnant women.

With that in mind, I recommend this herbal formula. It contains the Cramp Bark I was speaking of, as well as Chasteberry, which strengthens and tones the vagina, reducing the amount of free prostaglandins. (SEE: Natural Herbal Formula for Vaginal Health) There is no true cure for endometriosis, but I’m sure this formula will have your friend feeling better in no time. Good luck!
