Unfortunately, consistent rubbing or touching can desensitize this organ and keep you from climax. Desensitization can even make ordinary activities – like walking, sitting or crouching – painful. In addition to all of these other components – emotional well-being, foreplay, hormonal balance and genital health – a condition known as vulvodynia must also be considered. Vulvodynia relates to the vulva, which encompasses the clitoris, labia and vaginal opening. Nerves in this region are plentiful, meaning the opportunity for pleasure is equal only to that of pain.

The sensation of burning, tenderness or itching in and around the vulva not related to another condition – such as disease or illness – is explained by vulvodynia. It sounds a little vague and phantom-like, but vulvodynia is real and widely accepted by the medical community. The cause has yet to be determined, although many health care professionals attribute it to genetics, hormones or a combination of both.

We do know vulvodynia has nothing to do with sexually transmitted diseases. Rather, it is a condition in which the vulva is particularly sensitive to and irritated by anything it touches. The pain can be managed by wearing cotton underwear, avoiding douches and washing with warm water and gentle soap.
