When Arousal Doesn't Guarantee Wetness: One Woman's Battle with Vaginal Dryness

No matter how turned on she feels, she cannot produce enough natural lubricant for comfortable intercourse.
Case #: 1299
Concern:

If you jump in the pool, you’re going to get wet. If you have sex, you’re supposed get wet, too. Unfortunately, this statement is not the case for me. Every time I have sex, I remain dry. No matter how great the sex is. No matter how hot the guy is. No matter how much porn I watch, I cannot get wet. To allay the issue, my partners tend to cover their wands with lubricants, and even then, they still experience moderate discomfort.
Please give a list of reasons for why I am feeling this way!
Discussion:

Most women contend with vaginal dryness at some point in their lives. Although it's usually not discussed in these terms, women experience their own version of erectile dysfunction-- sometimes, your brain wants to have sex, but your body just doesn't cooperate. If you're anything like me when this happens, and your partner is aware, you probably don't know what to do other than apologize. You've probably even stumbled over yourself trying to assure him (or her) that you are, in fact, attracted to them, and that they didn't do anything wrong.
The list of reasons why this might occur is long and diverse, and includes both physical and psychological factors. Much like penile erections, vaginal lubrication and other mechanics of arousal are heavily influenced by hormone levels and easily disrupted by physical conditions that interfere with neurological impulses from the brain. If the issue is persistent, and consistently prevents you from enjoying sex to the fullest possible extent, it is very likely that there is an underlying physical cause.
Why Does Vaginal Dryness Occur?

It sounds like you have probably ruled out most of the usual psychological reasons for insufficient vaginal lubrication, which include high stress, insufficient arousal, and lack of attraction to a partner. That leaves the physical possibilities. Persistent vaginal dryness, despite adequate arousal, is often a sign of abnormal estrogen levels. Although the likelihood of developing estrogen imbalance increases with age and the problem is most common among menopausal and post-menopausal women, estrogen imbalance can affect women of any age. Sexual function, as well as the health of the sex organs, depends on a normal balance of androgens. The vaginal lining requires healthy ratios of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone to maintain normal elasticity, acidity, and lubrication. Because different hormones regulate the libido and the mechanics of arousal, it is possible to desire sex but fail to achieve a physical state of arousal.
Certain medical conditions or prescription medications may disrupt levels of estrogen and other hormones in the body. Antidepressants, some painkillers, and birth control medications are prime examples. Standard douching practices can also interfere with the vagina's natural environment and limit its ability to self-regulate.
Tips for Staying Wetter

Most women require at least 20 minutes of foreplay, and usually longer, to prepare for sex physically. If you and your partners are already taking as much time as you need to get turned on, it would be a good idea to find out if you are suffering from hormonal imbalance. There are a number of laboratory tests that a doctor can perform to diagnose estrogen imbalance. If you have abnormal estrogen levels, you may benefit from herbal supplements formulated to help balance estrogen and progesterone. (TRY: Herbal Formula for Vaginal Dryness)
Some other things you can do in addition to whatever treatment you choose include staying hydrated and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A good diet and regular exercise will boost your body's natural ability to produce estrogen and maintain a harmonious balance between androgens. You can also increase the amount of soy foods in your diet, which are known to contain "plant estrogens," or nutrients that mimic some of the effects of estrogen in the body.
