Risks of Hormone Replacement Therapy
In the 1930s, scientists started injecting women with estrogen to reduce the symptoms of hot flashes. A few decades later, the hormone injections have remained a common treatment option for alleviating symptoms of hormonal changes, and while considered safe, hormone replacement therapy has lead to a few drawbacks. Despite the possible side effects, doctors use HRTs to improve sex lives, stabilize mood and encourage masculine or feminine characteristics.

When Should I Consider HRTs
Ladies will usually consider HRTs after the age of 40, and most women who remove their ovaries and experience menopause will too consider HRTs. If you notice the following symptoms, you may want to consider taking HRTs:
  • Moderate or severe hot flashes
  • Experience a loss to your periods
  • Start menopause before age 45
Risk Factors
Cancer Risk: Some experts worry that HRT may increase the risk of cancer to the endometrium. Still, experts who administer HRT will prescribe progesterone that eliminates the additional risks. Meanwhile, estrogen taken without progesterone increases breast cancer risk.

Menstruation: Ladies who still have their uterus lining and who have taken HRTs can start to menstruate again.

Nausea: Nausea remains the most common side effect of HRT.

Tender Breasts: The increase to hormonal levels leave the breasts feeling tender.

Increased Blood Pressure: Ladies and gentlemen with a history of blood pressure problems may be unable to use HRTs because of risk that progesterone raises blood pressure.
