Are Birth Control Pills Ruined Your Sex Drive?
Hormone-based birth control works by tricking the brain into thinking there’s a pregnancy, which keeps the ovaries from producing more eggs. But the additional progesterone or estrogen in the uterus and cervix can be too much for the liver to eliminate, and may make it unable to support the synthesis of neurotransmitters (dopamine, acetylcholine, serotonin).
The hormonal imbalance can lead to low libido, loss of orgasm, mood swings and depression. Too much estrogen can lead to growth of the labia minora, tender or sagging breasts, or an uncomfortably wet vagina with no feeling. Likewise, too much progesterone can cause a dry, numb vagina with heavy discharge or yeast infection, and can also lead to intercourse pain.
The imbalance of hormones caused by birth control pills and other hormone birth control methods creates a deficiency of the androgen hormones (androstenedione, free testosterone and DHT), resulting in shrinkage of the clitoris and G-spot, lower libido and sexual frustration from difficulty achieving orgasm.
