Side Effects of SSRI & Antidepressants

Billions of dollars are spent each year on anti-depressant drugs. Patients experience different side effects and various degrees of sexual dysfunctions due to SSRIs. Anti-depressants reduce the production of nitric oxide, which reduces blood flow that leads to a flaccid penis and other side effects such as: nausea, agitation, sleep problems, weight gain, suicidal thoughts, and GI problems. [1][2] (LearnNatural Ways To Restore Serotonin & Nitric Oxide)

Three most common antidepressant-induced sexual side effects include:
  1. Weak erection or unable to initiate an erection
  2. Decreased sexual drive (low libido) or blocked orgasm
  3. Decreased physiological arousal and lubrication in women
Other sexual dysfunctions side effects varies from person to person due to hormonal irregularities included: painful ejaculation, persistent erection, penile anesthesia, clitoral priapism, and spontaneous orgasm with yawning.

Dr. Cipriani published a list of popular anti-depressant drugs based on his 117 case studies. Two types of measurements were applied: efficacy and acceptability. Efficacy based on the responded effectiveness of the drugs; acceptability, on the patients’ tolerance to the undesirable side effects. A higher acceptability rate suggests patients stopped taking the drugs. Due to the limited number of case studies and wide range of side effects from the anti-depressants, the chart below does not indicate the true potency among the general population. [1]
