Does Vaginal Douching Mean Vaginal Hygiene?
Proper hygiene should always be practiced among women. It’s unpleasant to know that there are certain conditions that some women experience due to laziness, probably.

There are numerous reasons why things like vaginal odor occur. But most likely, you may have developed vaginal bacterial or yeast infection. For women at an early age of 18-45, the common causes of vaginal odor are the following:
  • Bacterial vaginosis & yeast infection - 65%
  • STD - Chlamydia & Gonorrhea - 24%
  • Poor hygiene - 5%
  • Vaginal or Cervical Cancer - 4%
  • Rectovaginal fistula - 2%.
As we can see, the cause which has the highest percentage is bacterial vaginosis & yeast infection. Vaginal yeasts are always present in the vagina as they are part of its “ecosystem”.  Yeasts won't infect you if your vaginal immunity is strong. You need to maintain the right pH level around the vagina so that it won’t be vulnerable to infections.

Vaginal yeast infection occurs when your vaginal immunity is suppressed by the hormone prostaglandin E2 (PEG-2).  Your vagina, cervix and uterus release PEG-2 to help you build a good environment for sperms to survive in order to fertilize an egg and to help implant the fertilized egg. Semen, which is excreted by men during sexual intercourse, contains a lot of prostaglandin E2 to help sperms survive and to swim into the uterus. However, prostaglandin E2 is an inflammatory hormone and immune suppressor too. An excessive amount of this hormone may trigger yeast infection.

Yeast infection is the reason why the vagina smelled nasty. This vaginal infection may further develop into a more serious disease such as inflammation of the pelvis. Certain precautions should be taken in order to prevent this from happening.

Douching is common for women when cleansing their vagina. It is estimated that 40% of American women douche regularly, mostly for hygiene purposes. Douching, aside from cleaning the vagina, also eliminates vaginal odor and rinses blood away after monthly periods. There are also other reasons why they use douching. Some people believe that douching prevents pregnancy and avoids getting sexually transmitted disease (STD).

They say that when you douche your vagina immediately after having sex, it provides a protection from unwanted pregnancy. Nevertheless, some people insist that it actually pressures the sperm into the uterus thus increases the possibility of conception. But none of these have been proven scientifically, so it’s not safe to douche if you don’t want to get pregnant just as it’s not advised to douche if you want to.

Not all women consider douching as a necessary thing to do. Some even believe that doing this upsets the delicate balance of vaginal flora and it can increase the risk of vaginal infection. Some experts also believe that too much douching can push infection-causing bacteria up into the uterus, fallopian tube and ovaries. There is also a conviction by some women that douching can reduce the risk of pre-term delivery, but there are also other groups of women that believe in the contrary that increases the danger. None of these are proven because they are just beliefs of certain groups and their opinions.

Douching for vaginal hygiene is one of the many ways to improve vaginal hygiene and wellness. It’s a very unpleasant thing to have stinking genitals, especially for women. While having sex is healthy, there are also things that we should all be aware of.

Douching offers a means to wash away the bacteria in your vagina. By using water, vinegar, baking soda, iodine or herbal disinfectants, you will surely achieve a clean vaginal area. In some places, women will put a variety of antiseptics and fragrances to do away with the foul odor. There are also commercialized douches that are especially prepared conveniently for women to put into practice the maintenance of having proper hygiene. A typical douche comes in a bottle which contains a liquid and is then sprayed upward into the vagina.
