She Had Her Tubes Tied and Now Doesn’t Want Sex

At age 33, she had a tubal ligation intended to prevent pregnancy. But it also took away her libido, meaning she no longer wants sex. On the rare occasion that she does engage, she struggles to reach orgasm. She enjoys sex but needs help with reigniting her passion.

Case #: 1353

Concern:

I’m a 33-year-old female, and I have had two c sections. Almost three years ago I had a tubal ligation. I’ve been married for eight years, and it seems that after the tubal ligation and c sections my sex drive decreased tremendously. I’m never in the mood for sex, and when I do engage, it’s extremely hard to have an orgasm. I really need help because I love sex, but I’m not getting any pleasure out of it.

Discussion:

According to the American Family Physician journal, 26 percent of married women in the United States between the ages of 15 and 44 undergo tubal ligation for birth control measures. It’s a common procedure, but the side effects it presents are not well discussed. This means that after surgery, many women are caught by surprise when they notice changes in their sexual responses.

Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome

Tubal ligation is associated with the condition post tubal ligation syndrome (PTLS). PTLS is the result of rapid drops in hormone levels caused by interrupted blood supply to the ovaries. One of the main functions of the ovaries is to produce estrogen and progesterone. But without an adequate supply of blood and oxygen, the ovaries either stop producing or dramatically decrease the hormones. The body, meanwhile, grapples to return to a state of balance.

Tubal ligation also destroys receptor cells located in the fallopian tubes. These cells deliver crucial messages from hormones to the brain. But tubal ligation either blocks or severs fallopian tubes, meaning the receptor cells are also damaged. Hormonal messages thus become lost within the body.

Symptoms of PTLS vary considerably from woman to woman. Some experience side effects only at specific monthly intervals, while others feel plagued most of the time. Complications tend to mimic the signs of menopause and include hot flashes, mood swings, irritability, trouble sleeping, and memory loss.

Loss of Libido

Loss of interest in sex is another common complaint from women who have undergone tubal ligation. These women go from enjoying intercourse on a regular basis to never wanting it at all. They don’t understand what’s wrong with them even as their relationships are put in jeopardy because their partners still want sex. This is just one of the reasons why doctors need to discuss PTLS with women before tubal ligation procedures.

Falling hormone levels are largely responsible for low sex drive. As estrogen levels wane, so too do those of progesterone. This hormone is often thought to exist singularly in males, but females also produce progesterone. It promotes healthy sexual responses like arousal and orgasm. Without arousal, a woman will have little interest in intercourse. It’s the age-old image of a man chasing a woman around the house begging for sex. When she does engage, orgasm isn’t likely to follow because, again, arousal didn’t come first.

Other Complications

To simplify sexual desire and arousal, however, is to do a great injustice to all females. Just like men, they also need to feel comfortable with their bodies and partners. Because PTLS presents a range of unpleasant side effects, a woman’s interest in sex may decrease as she battles fatigue, incontinence, bloat, and headaches. In some cases, hormonal imbalances are just the tip of the iceberg.

Women may also lose confidence in themselves or have distorted body images after tubal ligation. Many women associate their reproductive organs with femininity. The loss of these organs can cause many to reconsider sex as they worry their partners will no longer find them attractive.

Back to the Land of Desire

Fortunately, the symptoms of PTLS can be managed with an all-natural restorative formula. (SEE: Herbal Restorex Formula for Sexual Wellness) Ingredients like Dong Quai and Black Cohosh promote healthy tissue growth in the vagina and clitoris. This growth is necessary for you to again reach orgasm. Further benefit is yielded from herbs that restore balance to hormones. Once your internal functions are regulated, your libido will bounce back so that you again feel sexual desire and arousal.
