Mexican Wild Yam - A Healing Friend for all Senoritas

True to it’s name, Mexican Wild Yam does indeed grow wild (you may even find it in roadside ditches!). Of inane contradiction, however, is it’s native breeding ground of the eastern half of North America. It is a perennial plant of the Fabaceae family, a species of twining tuberous vines with natural habitats in marshes, swamps, and forest wetlands. When exposed to maximum sunlight, it can be found vining on shrubs.

Mid to late 20th century birth control pills used estrogen hormones that were chemically synthesized from diosgenin, a hormone precursor that occurs naturally in Mexican Wild Yam. The plant’s steroid-like saponins were also chemically converted into progesterone to be used in the contraceptives. Androgens and Cortisone were also chemically manufactured from the wild herb.

Mexican Wild Yam has been traditionally used to ease menstrual cramps. Believed to be a good antispasmodic, muscles are relaxed, nerves are soothed, and the pain associated with abdominal cramping is relieved. It has even been used to treat infertility. Morning sickness has been effectively overcome by combining Mexican Wild Yam with chasteberry and dandelion.

The herb is a key ingredient in the Natural Solutions For Irregular Periods formula that is known to help women with irregular menstrual cycles by resting dysfunctional hormonal patterns and signaling for realignment. It improves blood circulation and modulates various hormones.

Although extracts of Mexican Wild Yam have been primarily used to treat female-specific issues, it is alleged that the liver and endocrine system of both sexes also benefit from the herb’s potent agents. In fact, research has shown that it may even be effective in the treatment of  nervous conditions such as anxiety and restlessness.
