Baby Blues: Sometimes It’s the Little Things that Create Big Problems

How frustrating to have everything in working order and still not be able to achieve results! Yet sometimes the smallest things can be the deciding factor in whether a thing works or not. Having worked in I.T., sometimes it is as simple as checking to make sure the computer is turned on. I’m not saying you’re “doing it wrong”. But there could be some minor hang-ups that are creating major issues.

Sweat the Small Stuff

So you’ve had your eggs and his semen tested, and everything looks good: eggs are healthy, you’re ovulating properly; his sperm are plentiful and mobile. But there’s a lot more going on in the race of conception than just eggs and sperm. Well, on the sperm end of things. Prostatic fluid is the vaginal buffer to sperm, creating a neutral environment out of the combination of acid and base.

Stuck on You

Are you using lubrication? Some lubricants can add or detract from fertility just due to frictional considerations. Thick, gel-type lubricants make it difficult for sperm to get through the vagina without getting stuck somewhere. Warming, cooling, and tingling lubricants can do damage to sperm capsules, weakening them, and creating a higher probability of failure. If you’re going to use lubrication, it should be one that is very slick, with little to no additives.

Slip ‘N Slide

Lubrication can actually help you procreate—it serves as an additional barrier in the vagina, and can slide the sperm right up into the uterus. If you’re not susceptible to yeast infections, you can try naturally derived lubricants such as olive, coconut, grapeseed, or almond oil. Grapeseed oil is very light and thin, which makes it an excellent choice.

You can also try a more fertility specific lubrication. These are pH balanced to assist sperm in surviving the vagina, while they also fully coat the vaginal walls to help sperm coast into the uterus.
