Arthritis, Pain and Sex: How Sex Reduces Discomfort
Americans spent $128 billion on medical care costs for arthritis. With over 100 types of arthritis, it’s no wonder why Americans spend so much to treat such a common condition. For most individuals combating the condition a typical complaint is the joint pain, and while treatable in most instances, the pain will reoccur. Individuals looking to quell the pain may find treatment in the most unlikely of activities—sex.

Sex May Reduce Arthritis Pain
Most men and women who experience arthritis pain see a noticeable reduction to their sex lives. Menopause or male menopause keeps men and women from engaging in sex, but according to doctors, sex can relieve pain. According to Barry R. Komisaruk, PhD, an orgasm can block pain by the release of hormones that raise the threshold of pain. The pain around your hands, elbow and knees can see a major reduction after one orgasm.

Common Treatment for Arthritis Pain
Most individuals who experience arthritis pain will look to common treatment options, including:
  • NSAID
  • Rest
  • Exercises
These methods may offer temporary relief, but because the reoccurrence of pain is common, individuals may need to try alternative methods for reducing the pain.

Pain Management from Sex
According to the report, men and women who engaged in sex and experienced pain from arthritis saw a reduction to the discomfort for about 6 hours. Most NSAIDs may offer relief for 8 hours, but prolonged use can reduce the effectiveness of the drugs. Meanwhile, rest and exercise can manage and prevent pain, but some individuals may experience intense pain that requires more than rest and exercise.
