Depressing Downside To Some Antidepressants: Ejaculation Out of Control

Her depressed lover had been able to maintain erections, but after getting medicine for his moods he finds that he's no longer physically capable of sustaining an erection without ejaculating. What's going on? More importantly, can he fix it? Read on, get the facts and find out!
Case #:1841
Concern:

Before my boyfriend started taking anti-depressants, he could delay his orgasm for a good while, but since taking the drugs, he orgasms upon penetration. What can he take or do to remedy the problem?
Discussion:

It's enough irony to screw up a compass: he's too depressed to have sex, so he gets a prescription for antidepressant medication... that throws the biochemical machinery necessary for controlling ejaculations out of alignment, rendering him physically unable to have sex. So what's causing the problem? Let's take a look at how some antidepressants work to get a better lead on how to solve it.
Blocking Depression By...

The most common type of antidepressant medications are selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, or “SSRI” for short. They work by preventing serotonin, a neurotransmitter, from being absorbed by neurons after performing their duty of transmitting neural signals. Human neural networks communicate by a combination of biochemicals and electric signals. For biochemical messages, a molecule (or multiple copies of the same molecule) gets manufactured inside a neuron and released at the “sending end” of the cell, where they float through the inter-neural fluid until they make contact with a receptor on the next neuron's dendrite.
Think of it as similar to a deskbound messenger that manufactures different paper and ink for each different message he needs to pass along to the next deskbound messenger in the chain, who reads the message but then recycles it instead of passing that note along directly. The logic behind SSRI is to prevent the neurons from “wasting” received serotonin and pulling the molecules out of the receptors before they can be recycled.
Where's The Breakdown?

SSRIs also prevent your liver from filtering out “excess” serotonin. The problem is that SSRIs cannot block the liver from filtering out specific compounds; instead, all of the liver's filtration functions are affected. Think of it as instead of telling the workers in your office to put different types of plastics in different recycling bins to keep a supply of some plastics and eliminate others at the same rate, SSRI's simply take away the number of bins available, so all types of “waste” plastic start to accumulate in the office.
SSRIs also screw up the neural signals associated with the dopamine system, which is critical for releasing oxytocin, the 'feel-good' hormone generated by orgasms and responsible for general emotional well-being. In exchange, his body is producing too much prolactin, the post-orgasm hormone that normally counteracts dopamine (responsible for sexual arousal) and reduces his testosterone levels. And finally, the neural interference affects the nerves that trigger seminal production as well as the ones that let him control his ejaculations.
Breaking The Paradox

The first recommendation is to discuss the situation with his health-care provider, since this side-effect is obviously not contributing to treating his depression. It is possible that his depression has decreased below the level where the benefits of continued SSRI usage justify the drawbacks. If your boyfriend can be taken off SSRIs gradually, the two of you might also discuss putting him on an all-natural herbal supplement designed to repair damaged nerves, and to reduce overactive nerve-firing. (TRY: Natural Herbal Remedy for Climax Control).
Should you and your boyfriend choose to use this formula, your wisest choice would be to keep his health-care provider informed and to get an educated opinion on his progress as well as any adjustments he might need to make to his diet, exercise regimen, or dosages. This may well shave weeks off of his recovery time.
Trust the process, go at a steady pace, and his sexual performance will be back up to his pre-SSRI-standard before you know it. Good luck to both of you!
