“There are lies, damned lies and statistics.” --Mark Twain
Mark Twain may have had his doubts about the veracity of statistics, but data tells a story, and the statistics of breast augmentation surgery discuss a tall tale indeed. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 2012 was the year of the silicone breast implant. 330,0000 augmentation procedures were performed during the year, making it the most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States.
According to these same statistics, 72 percent of these patients opted for silicone implants compared with the 28 percent that wanted the saline-filled variety. While the FDA’s moratorium on silicone has been lifted for more than six years, a fear about the safety of implants still exists. Major scientific studies have indicated that modern silicone implants do not cause diseases like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, but the fear remains.
The Rising Statistics of Cosmetic Operations
The fear of diseases has been allayed because surgeons and educated consumers are more confident about the materials in breast implant. In 2006, when the moratorium was first lifted after a 14-year ban, 383,886 breast augmentation procedures were performed, 81 percent of which were saline implants and 19 percent were silicone. Fast forward to 2012 and the numbers indicate that 330,631 breast implant surgeries were completed--28 percent were for saline implants and 72 percent were for silicone.
Before 2012, the contender for the most popular cosmetic surgery went to liposuction. Over the last 10 years, a silent rivalry for the number No. 1 spot has been waged by liposuction and breast augmentation. But in 2012, 330,631 breast implant procedures were completed compared to just 313,011 liposuction surgeries.
The Public’s Perception
The public’s confidence in plastic surgery procedures is also on the rise, with more than a 3 percent increase in the total number of cosmetic procedures done in 2012, totaling almost 1.7 million surgeries. Despite economic fears, Americans spent almost $11 billion on cosmetic operations in 2012.
In the words of Las Vegas-based plastic surgeon Michael C. Edwards, MD, “Given the natural feel and aesthetic results that can be accomplished with silicone breast implants, it’s not surprising that breast augmentation continues to be ever more popular.”
A study published in the May 2013 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery indicated that 98 percent of the 225 women who participated in the study and underwent breast augmentation procedures were happy with the results of their surgeries. Almost all the women reported improvements in their self-esteem and the quality of their lives.
Breast Enhancement the Natural Way
If you want to enhance your breast with out the cost, you can opt for other methods. For one thing, use a heating pad on low or medium every day for 15 to 20 minutes. This will help increase the blood circulation to your breasts.
Consider Japanese Reiki Massage, which when properly performed by professional therapists, can improve breast circulation as well as reduce sagging breasts. Reiki sessions last about 15 minutes and involve breathing and touching palm techniques. For fuller breasts, include herbal products containing Pueraria Mirifica that can improve breast size.
