It is suggested to use as nutrient
supplement. It is also claim by the herb producer that Primrose
can prevent various sick conditions such as cancers, high cholesterol,
diabetes, inflammatory diseases, zinc deficiency, atopic dermatitis,
eczema, PMS, and hypersensitivity child. Primrose is used to treat
catarrh of the respiratory tract.
1) Evening primrose contains gamma linolenic acid (GLA).
GLA in humans normally is conversed by linoleic acid in the diet.
GLA is contributed in the forming of the nerve sheath. It is believed
that the nerve disease in diabetic patients is due to the ineffective
conversion of linoleic acid to GLA in these patients. In experimental
animals with diabetes, adding GLA to the diet corrects the nerve
damage.
2) Gamma linolenic acid plays a role in the formation of
Prostaglandins, which modified many functions of the body. Prostaglandin
especially plays a very important part in regulating the inflammatory
response (such as the swelling of a joint seen in gout or rheumatoid
arthritis, or even the swelling that occurs after an ankle sprain).
Many factors might interfere the converting process of linoleic
acid to form GLA, including aging, diabetes or stress. GLA formation
is also blocked when the diet contains excessive amounts of unsaturated
fatty acids in the diet. No one knows for sure whether prostaglandin
deficiencies are the cause of premenstrual tension and breast discomfort,
however, GLA supplements clearly do improve some types of neurological
disease.
Concerns
In animal studies, evening primrose
was substantially better at reversing diabetic neuropathy than either
blackcurrant or borage. This indicated that not all GLA-containing
natural oils are equally effective, and results cannot be predicted
from just the GLA content of the product being used. The same considerations
can be applied to commercial supplements. They may contain a lot
of GLA, but that does not mean that all of the GLA contained in
the product will be absorbed, or that some other component added
to the product may prevent the GLA from working.
Dosage
Doses of 1 to 3 grams per day has been
suggested.
Summary
Evening Primrose may help for neurological
diseases. It also is a herb supplement for PMS, arthritis, and skin
diseases.
Interesting Facts
Originally, the American Indians use
the oil of evening primrose to treat stomach upsets and respiratory
infections. Now, by the results of researches and the promotion
of food supplement makers, evening primrose oil is claimed to be
good for many conditions. Other than use for conditions such as
premenstrual syndrome, benign breast disease, elevated cholesterol,
and atopic skin disease, it also said Evening Primrose is capable
of preventing abnormal blood clotting, obesity, and degenerative
neurological diseases. More interesting is since this herb related
to the conversion of prostaglandin, it would associated with sexual
function.
