Cranberry

Cranberry - For urinary infection

Name:
Common Name: Cranberry, swamp cranberr
Botanical Name: Vaccinium macrocarpon Alt

Family: Ericaceae

Parts Used: Fruit

Sources

The American cranberry grows on both coasts of the United States, in natural or artificial bogs.

Chemical Component

Tannin, flavonoids (quercetin and myrecetin) and anthocyanidins.

Use Recommendations

Treat and prevent urinary tract infection.

Effects

1) In controlled studies, drinking 300 c.c.cranberry juice per day reduced the frequency of bacterial infections of the urinary tract by nearly 50%. This reflected that cranberry juice can prevent and eradicate some types of urinary tract infections.

2) The concentration of flavonoids and anthocyanidins in cranberry are relatively high. In the test tube, these chemical substances prevent the oxidation of Low Density Cholesterol (LDL). LDL oxidation leads to arteriosclerotic coronary artery disease. These same flavonols and anthocyanidins are found in red wines and grape juice. But the flavonoid content of cranberry juice is lower than that of grape juice but higher than that of wine or beer. Many researchers believe their presence helps explain why the French, who drink much more red wine, and eat much more fat than Americans, have fewer heart attacks.

Dosage

A dose of 300 milliliters (a glass) per day has been suggested. The daily dose for urinary infection, one capsule of 400 milligrams of dried cranberry had been suggested by clinical trials.

Summary

Cranberry juice shown evidence of reducing urinary infections especially in women. Regular consumption of cranberry juice may help prevent coronary artery disease.

Interesting Facts

Medical applications for cranberry have only become apparent within the last decade. Cranberry is a tasteful fruit, if it can treat or prevent urinary infection there should be very easy for many women and must be a good to know.
