Bilberry can be found in most European countries growing equally well in forests and uplands.

Chemical Component

Anthocyanines, Tannins, Flavonoids, Hydroquinone, Loeanolic acid, Neomyrtillin, Ursolic acid, phenolic acids and glycosides.

Use Recommendations

Bilberry is used to treat venous insufficiency and peripheral vascular disorders, varicose vein and hemorrhoids. It also uses for oro-pharyngeal, and intestinal inflammations.

Effects

The concentration of flavonoids (quercetin and myrecetin) and anthocyanidins in Bilberry are relatively high. In the test tube, these chemical substances prevent the oxidation of Low Density Cholesterol (LDL). LDL oxidation leads to arteriosclerotic coronary artery disease. These same flavonols and anthocyanidins are found in red wines and grape juice.

Concerns

Based on some experience of herbalists, use of the leaves could be dangerous.

Precautions
Only the fruit should be used. In rare cases, may cause digestive disturbances. Take with food to alleviate the problem if it occurs.
Dosage

80 mg. Twice a day of a fruit extract (contain 25% anthocyanidins). Therapeutic dose is suggested as 240-640 mg. Per day. Effect expected after 6-8 weeks.

Summary

Bilberry has been used to help venous diseases such as hemorrhoids, venous insufficiency, varicose vein and retinopathy. It also seems to be an effective treatment for diarrhea. Research reports suggested that bilberry is of value in treating elevated cholesterol and to prevent coronary heart disease. Leaves of this herb appear to contain toxic chemicals and should not be used.
