She takes birth control and, in a complete reversal of what should happen, no longer enjoys sex. Her vagina is dry, she cannot orgasm and she suffers from yeast infections. On top of this, she has a metallic taste in her mouth and breakthrough bleeding. The birth control is responsible for these symptoms because it has upset her hormonal balance.

Case #:

My sex life was great until I went on birth control. Now I have no lubrication for or orgasm during sex. I also have had breakthrough bleeding and a yeast infection. This problem is common enough. But I have a metallic taste in my mouth as well as metallic-smelling discharge. Is this a liver problem? Should I quit the pill? Thanks so much.

Dating as far back as Ancient Egypt, women have sought means to prevent pregnancy. Egyptian women discovered early on that fermented acacia prevents sperm from swimming up the vagina. They thus mixed this with cotton and other ingredients to create a birth control suppository.
In 1960, the pill was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use as an oral contraceptive. But 10 years later health concerns about the synthetic hormones in birth control caused the Senate to conduct hearings on its safety. The pill today is available in low-dose formulas, but injecting your body with hormones still poses hidden dangers – like the symptoms you’re currently experiencing.
Low Dose Birth Control
During the 1980s and 1990s, low dose birth control was developed as an alternative to oral contraceptives that contained high levels of estrogen and progesterone. Those early pills were found to cause weight gain, headaches and nausea. On a more serious note, they also contributed to blood clotting.
But regardless of the dosage, synthetic hormones are chemicals that upset the delicate balance of the body’s natural levels of estrogen and progesterone. These two hormones equalize each other so the body can perform the functions required of it. Estrogen increases blood clotting and body fat, whereas progesterone normalizes blood clotting and promotes the use of body fat. When one is out of balance, so is the other.

Vaginal Dryness and Birth Control
Many women who take birth control today complain of the changes it renders to their sex lives. It reduces libido – again, by upsetting hormone levels – and therefore impedes orgasm. It also encourages vaginal dryness in much the same way that menopause does.
The vagina is designed to naturally swell and lubricate in preparation for intercourse. This comes as a result of arousal and encourages penetration. A wane in sexual desire, however, impedes lubrication. If you don’t want intercourse, your body won’t willingly prepare for it. Fluctuating levels of hormones also disrupt the vagina’s ability to become wet. This can make for uncomfortable sex and even create painful skin abrasions when penetration does occur.
Other Side Effects
Fluctuations in estrogen levels are also responsible for the metallic taste in your mouth. Similarly, estrogen helps the vagina maintain an acidic environment that prevents harmful bacteria from growing to significant levels. Imbalanced hormones contribute to the growth of yeast, which explains the recurring infections you experience.
Breakthrough bleeding is another result of fluctuating hormones. Progesterone promotes a thick and healthy lining in the uterus every month that is shed during menstruation. Low levels of this hormone can cause the lining to be too thin and shed periodically in a watery discharge rather than just at the beginning of your period.
More than 50 percent of estrogens in the body are metabolized by the liver. When estrogen levels grow too high as a result of diet, environmental factors or birth control pills, they can tax this delicate organ and become free agents inside the body. In order to reduce the side effects of your birth control pills, you must start by changing or stopping the dose.
