What Causes an Enlarged Prostate?

Age is the teacher of wisdom--and the bearer of disease. Individuals lose their eyesight, hearing, reaction time and immune system defenses. Diabetes invades the body, while high blood pressure damages the blood vessels. High cholesterol stymies the flow of blood, and prostate inflammation slows the flow of urine. As men age, they often develop urinary, erection and ejaculatory problems set in by an enlarged prostate gland.

Know thy Prostate

Sitting a top the bladder, the prostate’s role in the body is to produce the white, alkaline liquid sperm use to swim in and to control the flow of urine. Each time a man ejaculates, the prostate exudes the white, alkaline liquid.

Prostate growth is natural. From the time they are babies, men will experience prostate growth. Each year, the prostate grows. But at age 40, some men experience an inordinate amount of growth, along with subsequent symptoms. The growth applies pressure to the bladder, resulting in frequent bathroom trips. Simultaneously, the growth impedes the flow of urine thanks to the constriction occurring over the urethra. Men will experience weak or slow-starting urine stream, weak erections and even premature ejaculation.

Causes

Enlargement is nature; hormonal imbalances are not. Men tend to lose a significant portion of anti-inflammatory hormones as they age. Meanwhile, excessive sex and masturbation throughout the course of life can deplete hormone levels. Men can experience heightened levels of estrogen and DHT that inflame the prostate. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Excessive ejaculation and sex
  • Poor diet

Prostate enlargement varies in severity among men and does not always pose a problem. Only about half the men with enlargement experience signs and symptoms that become severe enough for them to get medical treatment. It is important to note, however, that prostate gland enlargement is not related to the development of prostate cancer.

Natural Remedies

There are many powerful botanical formulas that helped men for centuries. Saw Palmetto, Urtica dioica, Selenium, Pygeum, Lycopene, Pumpkin Seeds and Isoflavone contain anti-inflammatory phytonutrients with critical anti-aging and prostate-specific health benefits. These natural compounds inhibit the action of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into DHT -- one of the main contributing factors to prostate problems.
