Preventing TSS through Organic Tampons
More than 30 years have passed since the outbreak of the deadly Toxic Shock Syndrome.
The life-threatening condition arrived at its peak in 1980 with 890 reported cases.
Although TSS can also occur in postsurgical wound infections or just about any other skin infection including vaginal infections, studies show that it is commonly associated with tampon use.
A whopping 90% of the reported cases involved menstruating women and 98% of those women used tampons. Though reported cases have greatly decreased over the years, some might say that the condition has long been forgotten. Forgotten perhaps, but never gone. A population-based surveillance in the Minneapolis area recorded around 61 TSS cases from 2005-2006.
Why Regular Tampons cause TSS
The women’s vagina has a natural flora that keeps it clean and moisturized. Now high-absorbent tampons absorb a little too much of this moist that making the vagina a breeding ground for bacteria. Since the Vagina is one of the most sensitive parts of female anatomy, it might be good to reconsider current tampon choices.
Regular tampons also have the presence of a toxin called Dioxin. Dioxin is a dangerous chemical that when the body absorbs high amounts, causes reproductive and developmental problems.
Some Companies and Manufacturers do admit that their tampons have dioxin components in them but only in minute levels. The presence of dioxin is not a threat especially in these levels. The real threat is its half-life: 11 years. Yes, that’s a decade and a year! So these so called “minute levels” will accumulate in your body and will cause damage to more than one of your body systems. Not really worth risking your life for.
