Losing your hair isn't just annoying. It can be downright scary. And the younger you are, the scarier it is. But before you run screaming to the hair clinic, it's important to do a bit of troubleshooting in order to determine the root cause (get it? Root cause?).
Hair loss has numerous contributing factors, and you can usually determine your own cause by figuring out which of these key factors matches your lifestyle.

The Cause of It All
If you're young, or just young at heart, you want to get the hair loss problem under control, as women aren't typically drawn to the James Taylor look. You could always wear a bandana like Brett Michaels, but that facade will wear thin pretty quickly. So let's get to the bottom of it. LiveScience published a list of the leading causes of baldness and hair loss in men, and they include:
- Harsh hairstyles like barrettes, dreads and cornrows. When you treat your hair like clay to be molded, it's ultimately going to suffer as a result.
- Chemically-based dyes and bleaches. Who knew that all of those un-pronounceable chemicals were actually bad for your hair follicles? Come to think of it, maybe you should have seen that one coming.
- Medical issues such as illness, surgery and medication use. Medicines like SSRIs (antidepressants), retinoids, beta-blockers and NSAIDs are just some examples of medications that can contribute to hair loss.
- Dietary issues such as yo-yo dieting, vitamin A deficiency, bulimia and anorexia. Nutritional deficiencies compromise your immune system and inhibit healthy function including hair growth.
- Aging. Not much we can do to turn back the hands on time on this one, but by maintaining healthy lifestyle habits, you can minimize hair loss as you get older.
Other hair loss causes include smoking and hormone imbalances. In fact, if we're to assume that you're not a 65-year-old anorexic man with cornrows (if you are, I'd love to meet you), then we can safely assume that hormone imbalance is our prime suspect. But what causes hormonal imbalances to occur in otherwise young and healthy men? Well, I have one word for you:
Masturbation
It works like this. When you masturbate with reckless abandon, your body depletes essential neurochemicals, including DHEA, testosterone and HGH. As the good chemicals are eliminated, your body begins to overcompensate with inflammatory hormones like prolactin, cortisol and DHT. DHT works to weaken the hair follicles. And to think, if only masturbation eliminated the hair on your back instead of the hair on your head, the world would be a much happier place.
The Regrowth Process
If you're nodding your head in agreement as you read phrases like “too much masturbation,” the solution is actually quite simple, and you may even be able to restore all of the hair that has receded. Most importantly, stop masturbating so much. For the time being, take a break and allow your hormone levels to return to some semblance of balance. Then, keep it in moderation.
Next, consider using an herbal remedy to stimulate new hair growth. The right remedy will depend on the severity of your hair loss. I mean, are we talking about a Jude Law level of hair loss, or a Tony Soprano level of hair loss?
Herbs like Fo Ti, Ginkgo and Mulberry are sufficient for mild hair loss (see: Botanical Formula For Problematic Hair Loss), but more severe hair loss will require more powerful, specially formulated herbs like Ashwagandha, Bupleurum and Tumeric Root (See: Natural Remedy For Extremely Severe Hair Loss)

Chronic masturbation has been your closest friend since you were 12, but answer me this: Would a true friend steal your hair? Take good care of yourself.
