Bupleurum - The Ancient Medicinal Herb of Asia

Bupleurum is a medicinal root native to parts of East Asia, where it is known as Chai Hu. The leaves of the plant are long and thin and resemble fennel. It usually grows in patches exposed to sunlight. An abundance of sun and well-drained soils will supply the ideal growing conditions for the plant that often lives for more than two years. Wherever it is cultivated, harvesting and collection of the Bupleurum root is carried out during two seasons, spring and the autumn. Roots are then stored and processed for their herbal medicinal properties.

In ancient Chinese literature, Bupleurum is recorded in great detail as a plant and herb dating to the first century BC and is listed as one of the famous “harmony” herbs of the Asian country. The Chinese "harmony" herbs are of an exclusive family believed to maintain the human body’s internal energies while moderating the optimal balance between the functions of the internal organs.

Bupleurum is known for its ability to reduce and replenish liver exhaustion and digestive disturbances, and is traditionally used to relieve infections of fever, hemorrhoids and indigestion. It is often included in herbal formulas that are designed to clear stagnation, irritability, and liver disease and has shown positive results in relieving spasms, lumps, and irregular menstrual bleeding. Traditionally, it is used as an herbal tonic remedy to improve liver functions; it has a strengthening action on the performance of the digestive tract, and is believed to be of benefit to patients affected by circulatory problems.

Herbs such as Bupleurum are known to enhance blood flow and detoxification when used in natural remedy formulas. In these cases, the herbs’ properties are strategically engineered to benefit ailments other than the ones it is primarily known for. For instance, in the Botanical Formula to Detoxify & Intensify Orgasm, the synergistic blend increases the production of prostaglandins, promotes the regulation of the proper secretion of sex hormones, and relaxes the vaginal and uterine muscles and cervical and clitoral tissues, allowing for better circulation and improved health.
